Overall Winners of the last 42 editions of the International Air Rally of Malta have come from Austria (2), Denmark (1), Finland (1), France (1), Germany (8), N Ireland (3), Switzerland (4) and the UK (22).

Per Bruel won the very first Malta Rally, flying a Piper PA12 Aztec (OY-BKI). All the others won three times each. David Surridge, from N Ireland, in 1970 in a Piper Comanche PA24 (G-ARUN), then in 1973 and 1974 in a Beech Baron (G-ATGR). Ian Cummings, from the UK, in the consecutive years 1977, 1978 and 1979 in a Piper Arrow 200 (G-AYII). He again took part in 1980 – but opted to be a non-competing rallyist. John Keates, also from the UK, in the consecutive years 1988, 1989 and 1990 in a Cessna C182 (G-HUFF). He took part again as crew member in 2002. Michel Horat, from Switzerland, in the consecutive years 2005, 2006 and 2007 in a Cessna 182S (HB-CYO). On only his second participation in 2005, he set a different - but incredible - record. Michel Horat placed FIRST IN ALL FOUR QUALIFYING Competitions - Arrival, Timed Section, Flight Planning and Concours d’Elegance.
